Advisers put on their sneakers and donned some brightly coloured ribbons this weekend, as part of their AFA community day. But the highlight was when the wishes of two young girls came true.
The AFA National Conference kicked off on Saturday in the sweltering heat. But that didn’t put advisers off wanting to be the best, as they took each other on at netball, Frisbee, soccer and tug-of-war.
“The purpose of today was to bring the advice community together with the charities we support and the general community,” said Esther Althaus, who helped run the event.
The pinnacle of the day however, came after advisers were thoroughly worn out and rope-burnt.
Two young girls, Maddy and Brieanna from Brisbane, got a special surprise presented to them at the end of the day. The Make a Wish foundation, supported by the AFA and MLC, granted the two girls’ wishes to meet some important people – who we can’t name just yet.
Althaus said that giving back to the community was part of the AFA’s core values, and that days like this were vital in demonstrating that advisers do care deeply for the community. She also hoped that the AFA would start a chain of events by “paying it forward”.
“The highlight was just seeing the interaction of adults and kids throwing themselves in there and having fun,” Althaus said.
